SK Hynix said it will begin mass production of its 16Gb LPDDR6 low-power mobile DRAM in the second half of this year, with the first products set to be used in Xiaomi’s next-generation flagship smartphone. According to ChainCatcher, the chip was completed in March and uses a 10nm-class sixth-generation 1c process with improvements in data-processing speed and power efficiency over the previous generation.

LPDDR is widely used in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Recent demand from AI servers has pushed LPDDR prices higher, with contract prices continuing to rise and first-quarter global mobile DRAM revenue increasing 64.5% quarter on quarter, according to ChainCatcher. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are ahead of Micron in preparations for LPDDR6 mass production. LPDDR6 production is also expected to intensify competition in the SO-CAMM market, a low-power memory module considered a companion solution for AI server CPUs.

SK Hynix has supplied LPDDR products to Xiaomi since 2013. In June, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang visited SK Hynix’s booth at the Taipei International Computer Show and left the inscription “LOVE SOCAMM” on a 192GB SO-CAMM.
