According to Axios, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is calling for all data centers to be powered by renewable energy by 2030 and for companies to be more transparent about their energy, water and land impacts. The move comes as electricity demand for data centers is projected to at least double over the next four years, while the International Energy Agency said renewable generation is set to surpass coal this year. The UN said the goal reflects the rapid rise in electricity demand from AI and data centers, but analysts said meeting it would require power-sector changes that are far beyond current plans. The initiative also comes as Google, Microsoft and Amazon have highlighted efficiency gains in recent sustainability reports, even as their overall resource use continues to rise.
