Japan and South Korea’s top three MLCC suppliers shipped record monthly volumes in June, reaching their highest level in nearly five years, according to TrendForce. According to ChainCatcher, Murata, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and Taiyo Yuden shipped 140 billion, 98 billion, and 40 billion units, respectively, with momentum continuing into July.
AI applications were the main driver, as CSP vendors maintained strong demand for proprietary ASIC platforms such as Google TPU and AWS Trainium, supporting growth in demand for high-capacitance, low-voltage, and small-size MLCCs.
At the same time, Japanese and South Korean suppliers accelerated capacity shifts from consumer-grade X5R to higher-end X6S and X7R specifications, squeezing consumer-grade MLCC capacity in the 1µF to 22µF range. Inventory days for mainstream products have generally fallen below 30 days, while spillover demand has prompted distributors, agents, and smaller customers to rush orders. Taiwanese and mainland China suppliers have seen improved order visibility, with quotes rising. Agents have raised average prices by 20% to 25%, and spot market prices have climbed to two to three times original levels. TrendForce said the consumer-grade MLCC market is currently showing a structural mismatch between weak end-demand and firmer channel pricing.
