Japan Issues Tsunami Warning After 7.1 Magnitude Quake

According to Lianhe Zaobao citing AFP, Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Tuesday, July 28. The quake hit at 4:27 p.m. Japan time, or 3:27 p.m. Singapore time, with its epicenter off Kyushu and an intensity of 7 on Japan's seismic scale, the highest level. The agency said tsunami waves could reach 1 meter and were expected around 5 p.m., while the Japan Broadcasting Corporation said waves as high as 1 meter may already have been recorded. Japan typically experiences hundreds of earthquakes each year, accounting for about 18% of the world's total.
