Hong Kong's Regional Court on July 23 sentenced 37-year-old Xiao Rui to 6 years and 9 months in prison after finding him guilty on four counts of money laundering and one count of using a false copy of a document.

According to PANews, Xiao Rui, the son of former Wuhan Commission for Discipline Inspection member Xiao Jun, was accused of laundering more than HK$64 million through underground banks and using false information to obtain Hong Kong residency.

The court rejected Xiao Rui's claim that the money came from his mother's legitimate business earnings and proceeds from selling Bitcoin. The judge said Xiao Rui could not have been unaware of the asset threshold for the Capital Investment Entrant Scheme when he applied to enter Hong Kong. Under cross-examination, Xiao Rui admitted his mother had worked as a nurse and clerical staff at a hospital, and the court did not accept his explanation for Bitcoin-related income because no transaction records were provided.
