According to Yonhap, Hanwha Ocean Co., the shipbuilding arm of South Korea's Hanwha Group, said Friday it signed multiple agreements with U.S. companies on naval ship design and shipbuilding supply chain development. The deals were signed in Washington on Thursday during the opening ceremony of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center, which was set up to support the "Make American Shipbuilding Great Again" initiative aimed at reviving the U.S. shipbuilding industry.
Hanwha Ocean said it signed a professional services agreement with Leidos Gibbs & Cox for the design of the Global Fast Sealift vessel, following an April memorandum of understanding on next-generation naval ship design and expanding U.S. shipbuilding capacity. It also signed an MOU with Hanwha Philly Shipyard, a U.S. subsidiary of Hanwha Group, and Delaware County Community College on shipbuilding technology training and workforce development, as well as another MOU with Hanwha Philly Shipyard, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Philadelphia Growth Partnership on strengthening the supply chain.
The company said it is prepared to support the revival of the U.S. shipbuilding industry while backing the continued growth of South Korea's shipbuilding sector. Jung In-sub, president and head of the Management Support Office at Hanwha Ocean, said the company will expand cooperation in areas most critical to the U.S. and help drive the MASGA project.
