According to Lianhe Zaobao citing Xinhua, Colombia’s military said Tuesday that government forces rescued 45 civilians in an operation in the western province of Choco after they were kidnapped by the National Liberation Army (ELN). The military said two soldiers were killed and five were wounded, and that the operation forced the armed group to release all detainees, including four minors; the civilians were flown by military helicopter to a military base.
The military had earlier said 39 civilians were being held before revising the figure to 45. It said the civilians were taken after their bus was intercepted on a highway from Quibdo, the capital of Choco, to El Carmen de Atrato. The ELN, founded in 1964 and believed to have several thousand members, is designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
