New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s office said she plans to sign an executive order on Tuesday to halt construction of large data centers for up to one year.

According to Odaily, the ban would take effect immediately and apply to data centers with power usage of 50 megawatts or more. The office said the pause is intended to give the state time to develop data center regulations that support environmental goals while ensuring grid operations.

The move would make New York the latest state to address infrastructure development tied to the AI boom. The report said no other state has implemented a similar pause, though dozens of cities and counties across the United States have issued temporary bans on data center construction, and many states have proposed similar measures.

Opponents cited in the report said data centers that support artificial intelligence and computing systems could strain local power supplies and raise utility costs for residents. Some voters have sought to recall politicians who support data center development.
