According to Lianhe Zaobao citing AFP, Canada’s Ministry of Infrastructure said on July 11 that Canada and the U.S. state of Michigan have agreed to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge on July 27, with support from the U.S. government. The USD 4.7 billion bridge (about SGD 8.26 billion) links Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, and construction began in 2018.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said last month that Canada had indefinitely delayed the opening date at the request of the United States. In February, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to block the bridge’s construction, saying the U.S. was being treated unfairly and demanding that at least half of the bridge be owned by the United States. A fact sheet from the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said the bridge was fully financed by Canada and will be jointly owned by Canada and Michigan.
