Hong Kong Interbank Clearing Limited said it has recently identified multiple spoof websites that allegedly trick users into submitting personal information under the name of an “online buyer security guarantee.” According to ChainCatcher, the company said the sites solicit details including Hong Kong ID numbers, photos of identity documents, and phone numbers for purported “real-name verification,” and use cash rewards as an incentive.
The company said the suspected scheme also involves topping up and withdrawing funds through virtual wallets.
Hong Kong Interbank Clearing urged the public to stay alert to suspicious calls, websites, or other communications, and said anyone who believes they have been scammed should report the matter to police as soon as possible.
