Meta Faces Backlash Over AI Images Using Public Instagram Likenesses

According to Axios, Meta is drawing criticism after rolling out its Muse Image model and a Meta AI feature that lets users generate AI images by tagging any adult’s public Instagram account to incorporate that person’s likeness. Axios reported that users are not notified when someone creates an AI image using their likeness, and Instagram account holders must opt out if they do not want their images used. Public Citizen called the approach an “egregious invasion” of privacy, while talent agency CAA urged Meta to require affirmative consent before using anyone’s name, image, likeness, voice, or creative work. Meta said its tool includes protections intended to prevent policy-violating content such as violent, sexual, or defamatory imagery of real people, and Meta Superintelligence Labs chief Alexandr Wang told Axios the company is receiving feedback and considering next steps. SAG-AFTRA recommended members opt out of the feature in a Thursday post on X.
