AC Milan forward Santiago Gimenez was forced off with a right ankle problem late in Mexico’s 3-2 World Cup last-16 loss to England at the Azteca, according to Yahoo Sports. Gimenez, who came on at the hour mark, appeared to hurt the ankle with an awkward movement without contact from England’s Djed Spence and went to hospital for tests.
Mexican media reports via Sky Sport said exams ruled out a fracture and diagnosed a sprain. The report noted it is the same ankle Gimenez had operated on last December after being sidelined for five months last season. England, who finished with 10 men, booked a quarter-final against Erling Haaland’s Norway.
