WORLD CUP | Infantino defends mandatory hydration breaks at 2026 World Cup
2026-06-24 10:28:31
FIFA president Gianni Infantino defended the introduction of mandatory three-minute hydration breaks in the middle of every match at the 2026 World Cup and said FIFA will consider using them at future tournaments based on the experience, according to Yahoo Sports. Infantino said the breaks were introduced for player welfare, argued they do not generate additional revenue because broadcast and commercial agreements were signed in advance, and said applying breaks only in hotter matches would be unfair because it could give some coaches an advantage. The stoppages have drawn criticism from some players, managers and fans who say they disrupt the flow of games, and they have been used for extra advertising in some countries.
