Alibaba Group’s chief scientist Zhou Jingren appeared at a recent management team-building event in Hangzhou, amid market rumors that he had submitted a resignation, according to Jiemian News. The event was described in an internal post by Alibaba partner and Amap chairman Liu Zhenfei, with photos showing attendees including Jack Ma, Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu Yongming, Jiang Fan, and Ant Group chairman Jing Xiandong and CEO Han Xinyi.

In mid-June, multiple platforms reported that Zhou had applied to leave Alibaba. After an AI organizational reshuffle on June 8, Alibaba split the Tongyi large-model business Zhou previously oversaw and placed it under Wu’s direct management; Zhou was promoted to group chief scientist and set up an AI Future Research Institute. Alibaba said on June 14 that reports of Zhou’s resignation were “pure rumor.”

Alibaba’s 2026 fiscal year annual report listed Zhou as a current Alibaba partner and senior vice president; it also showed executive vice president Shao Xiaofeng exiting the partner list and CFO Xu Hong joining it. Wu has said Alibaba’s AI infrastructure investment over the next five years will far exceed 380 billion yuan.
