A Seven Research commentary revisits an essay by Pinduoduo founder Colin Huang, arguing that the company’s group-buying model can be understood as a way to reduce uncertainty for manufacturers and consumers, and that Huang explicitly raised blockchain as a potential tool to make such “certainty” enforceable.

According to ChainCatcher, the author says Huang described Pinduoduo’s business as a form of “insurance” against uncertainty, suggesting that wealth tends to accumulate with richer groups because they can better absorb unpredictable shocks, while others pay for certainty through safer financial choices and higher-trust transactions.

The commentary highlights Huang’s idea of “reverse insurance,” where many consumers’ purchase intentions are aggregated through mechanisms such as group orders and time limits to create more predictable demand. In this framing, manufacturers face less risk of producing goods that do not sell, and may return part of the reduced risk premium through lower prices.

The author notes that near the end of Huang’s essay, Huang questioned whether decentralization could help prevent fraud and enable “certainty” to be standardized and monetized, asking whether blockchain is naturally suited to this “reverse insurance” concept.

Building on that point, the commentary argues that blockchain-based tools such as smart contracts could bind commitments to collateral, making cancellations costly and commitments more credible. The piece further contrasts rule-based certainty in Bitcoin—fixed supply and transparent, hard-to-change rules—with fiat currency certainty, which it characterizes as dependent on human discretion.
