On December 4, it was reported that the Malaysian authorities have set up a joint open-ground task force, using high-tech drones and ground police, to shut down nearly 14,000 illegal bitcoin mining machines. State-owned power company Tenaga Nasional (TNB) reported that since 2020, these illegal miners have stolen $1.10 billion worth of electricity from the national grid. Authorities use drones to search for hot signatures, and ground police use sensors to detect illegal electricity use. Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transition Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said allowing such activities to occur not only involves theft, but also poses a challenge to the national grid system.
