BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and chief operating officer Rob Goldstein said that tokenization is becoming a transformative force in global markets, with a potential impact comparable to the rise of the early internet.
Writing in The Economist, the executives argue that recording asset ownership on digital ledgers could modernise the financial system by increasing efficiency, transparency and access. They argue that tokenisation is now at a stage similar to the internet in 1996 - growing rapidly and possibly expanding faster than most people expect.
The two executives stressed that the two major advantages of tokenization include the potential for instant settlement and the replacement of onerous private market processes with code. They believe that tokenization will serve as a bridge between traditional institutions and digital innovators, with investors ultimately buying, selling and holding all asset types through a single digital wallet.
