Dow, S & P 500 and Nasdaq futures rose as traders focused on Nvidia earnings and non-farm payrolls reports

US stock index futures were mostly up on Sunday night after a period of volatility with the end of the government shutdown, a stalled rebound in the tech sector and fading expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut ahead of key US labour market data.
Dow Jones Industries Average Index futures held steady, while the S & P 500 and Nasdaq 100-related contracts rose 0.3% and 0.5%, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite experienced a period of volatility, closing lower last week, in part due to the loss of momentum among giant technology stocks including Alphabet (GOOG), Amazon (AMZN), Broadcom (AVGO) and Meta (META). The S & P 500 and Dow both suffered sharp losses on Thursday, although they ended the week slightly higher.
With the end of the government shutdown, the full recovery in economic data remains uncertain. But investors will get their first official labour market snapshot this week, with the much-anticipated September jobs report due on Thursday. The report will be delayed to reflect the state of the US labour market, and last week's more cautious tone from Federal Reserve officials has also raised questions about next month's interest rate decision.
This week will also see the last few major announcements of the earnings season, especially for companies related to AI trading. NVIDIA (NVDA) will release its blockbuster earnings on Wednesday, an event that has been much watched. Investors will also get an update on what's happening to consumers with retailer earnings led by Walmart (WMT). Home Depot (HD), Target (TGT), Lowe's (LOW) and Gap (GAP) will also release earnings this week.
