美国白宫国家经济委员会主任哈塞特表示，特朗普在政府停摆期间大规模裁员的威胁取决于民主党是否会在政府资金僵局中屈服。哈塞特表示，“如果总统认定谈判毫无进展”，就会开始裁员。他说，他希望“我们能让民主党人认识到，避免这样的裁员是常识。”哈塞特说，如果民主党“周一回到城里后能够理智行事”，那么他认为“没有理由裁员”。
