The International Criminal Police Organisation announced on Friday that its co-ordinated "Operation Serengeti 2.0", which is understood to involve investigators from 18 African countries and the UK, had succeeded in arresting 1,209 suspected cyber criminals who collectively attacked nearly 88,000 victims.
The operation, which began in June this year, has so far recovered $97.4 million and dismantled 11,432 malicious infrastructure. During the operation, Zambian authorities dismantled a massive online investment scam scheme that lured around 65,000 victims into investing in cryptocurrencies through an advertising campaign that promised high-yield returns. The amount of fraud is estimated to be as high as $300 million.
In Angola, investigators dismantled 25 crypto mining centers, arrested 60 Chinese nationals for illegally verifying blockchain transactions, and seized more than $37 million worth of mining and IT equipment.
