The international monetary fund (IMF) said in a statement that its second-in-command, Gita Gopinath, will leave her post at the end of August to return to Harvard University. IMF Managing Director Georgieva will appoint Gopinath's successor in "due course," the IMF said. Gopinath joined the IMF in 2019 as the organization's first female chief economist and was promoted to first deputy managing director in January 2022. There was no immediate comment from the US Treasury. The choice of IMF managing director is traditionally chosen by European countries, while the choice of first deputy managing director is recommended by the US Treasury.
