The European Union's law enforcement agency, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, said on Monday that a coordinated enforcement operation in Zurich had successfully dismantled Cryptomixer, a cryptocurrency mixing service allegedly used by cybercriminals to launder illicit bitcoins.
The crackdown, carried out by Swiss and German police in collaboration with the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation between November 24 and 28, resulted in the seizure of three servers, Cryptomixer.io domain names, more than 25 million euros ($29 million) worth of bitcoin and more than 12 terabytes of data.
Officials say Cryptomixer has helped launder more than 1.30 billion euros of Bitcoin since 2016. Its long settlement window and random allocation of funds make it an ideal tool for concealing the proceeds of crime.
