Trump: Will seek long-term takeover of Washington, D.C. police force

On August 13 local time, US President Trump said in a speech at the Kennedy Center on the same day that he would seek long-term federal control over the police force in Washington, D.C. According to Article 740 of the Washington, D.C. Local Autonomy Act, Trump's control over the city's law enforcement can only be for 30 days unless extended by Congress. According to ABC, when asked if he would work with Congress to extend emergency authorizations that allow temporary control of local law enforcement, Trump said that Congress needs to pass a bill to solve the crime problem, which should include an extension of the 30-day period for federal police to control Washington, D.C.
