Google said on its blog that to further increase transparency, it is building ways to make it easier to detect how AI editing is being used in Google Photos. Starting next week, Google Photos will indicate within the app when a photo was edited using Google AI. Photos edited using tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Zoom Enhancement already include metadata according to the International News Telecommunications Council's (IPTC) technical standards to indicate that they were edited using generative artificial intelligence. Now, Google will go a step further and have this information displayed in the Photos app along with information like filename, location, and backup status. In addition to indicating when images are edited using generative AI, Google will also use IPTC metadata to indicate whether images are composed of elements from different photos using non-generative features. This work is ongoing, and the company will continue to gather feedback and evaluate additional solutions to increase transparency about AI editing.
