Character.AI charged with possibly causing the suicide of a minor

Character Technologies, a robot chat tool developer, has been sued by a mother in Florida. The company designed and marketed an artificial intelligence (AI)/robot chat tool for teenagers. The plaintiff alleges that Character.AI encouraged her teenage child to become suicidal and caused her child to commit suicide in February 2024 through inappropriate human-computer interaction. The complaint alleges that the technology of the Character.AI product was used to explore the psychological dependence of underage users with faded decision-making abilities, impulse control, emotional maturity, and incomplete brain development.
