Vice-President Kamala Harris' transition team is vetting candidates to replace Gary Gensler as chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to two people familiar with the deliberations. The two possible replacements, Chris Brummer of Georgetown Law School and Erica Williams, chairperson of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), are said to be more optimistic about cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin than Gensler.
Harris has neither publicly nor privately committed to replacing Gensle, and the extent to which she is considering Brummer, Williams or other potential candidates is uncertain. At present, with Harris as a candidate for a short time and other policy issues outstanding, her team is more focused on voting matters. "It's unclear who the favorites are, and the Harris campaign is concerned that showing too positive about cryptocurrencies before the election will lose the votes of progressive voters who think cryptocurrencies are a'scam ', while not winning her actual new voters," said one person familiar with the matter.
A spokesperson for the Harris transition team said: "The transition team will not conduct any personnel selection prior to the election, instead we are focused on building the necessary infrastructure to be ready for the inauguration."
