Coinbase is seeking a ruling from the U.S. District of Columbia Federal Court to compel the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to provide documents on how securities laws apply to cryptocurrencies. Coinbase sued the SEC in June for failing to comply with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requirements. Coinbase wants to obtain documents on external and internal communications regarding the SEC's investigation into whether cryptocurrencies are securities, particularly regarding Ethereum. The SEC declined to provide the documents, claiming it is exempt from FOIA, but recently said that exemption may not apply. According to Tuesday's filing, the SEC now says it will take three years to provide the documents Coinbase wants. (The Block)
