The North Carolina Legislature has passed a bill banning the state from implementing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) issued by the US Federal Reserve, and the Senate has overturned Governor Roy Cooper's veto power. The bill bans North Carolina from accepting CBDCs as a payment method and prohibits it from participating in future CBDC tests by "any branch of the Federal Reserve."
On September 9, the Republican-dominated Senate passed the bill by a vote of 27 to 17, just above the 60% majority needed to override Democrat Cooper's veto, and House Bill 690 passed.
The move comes after the North Carolina House overturned Cooper's veto power in early August by a 73-41 vote.
