South Korean police arrested a man in his 40s in August 2024 for allegedly planning a major cryptocurrency scam that defrauded 158 investors of a total of 16 billion won (about $12 million).
It is reported that the scam campaign lasted from November 2021 to June 2022. The suspect promised investors a monthly return of 18% under the guise of a fake cryptocurrency mining business. The personal losses of the victims ranged from 1.20 million won to 250 million won. After the suspect failed to attend the committal hearing in September 2023, he managed to evade capture for up to 10 months by spending about 21 million won for eye, nose and facial contouring plastic surgery and wearing a wig to change his appearance. In the end, the police successfully arrested him through surveillance video, phone records and Internet search history.
