On August 30, the global government affairs team of the X platform issued an announcement in response to "the Supreme Court of Brazil will suspend X's business in the country until August 29":
"Soon, we expect Judge Alexandre de Morais to order the closure of X in Brazil - simply because we will not comply with his illegal orders to vet his political opponents. These enemies include a duly elected senator and a 16-year-old girl, among others. As we tried to defend ourselves in court, Judge de Morais threatened to jail our Brazilian legal representative. Even after she resigned, he froze all of her bank accounts. Our challenges to his clearly illegal actions were either dismissed or ignored. Judge de Morais' colleagues on the Supreme Court were either unwilling or unable to confront him.
We absolutely do not insist that other countries also have the same free speech laws as the United States. The fundamental issue here is that Judge de Morais is asking us to violate Brazil's own laws. We will not do that at all. In the days to come, for the sake of transparency, we will publish all of Judge de Morais' illegal demands as well as all relevant court documents. Unlike other social media and technology platforms, we will not secretly comply with illegal orders.
