Check Point Research, a provider of cyber security solutions, has discovered a new type of malicious software called Styx Stealer, which can steal large amounts of material, including cryptocurrency, through a mechanism called "clipping." It can be rented for free on developers' websites.
Windows users with the latest operating system are not at risk, as Styx Stealer relies on a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Defender that was patched last year.
Check Point Research identified eight wallets, possibly belonging to Turkey-based Styx Stealer developers, that received approximately $9,500 in cryptocurrency as payment in the first two months of the malicious software's operation. The security team also obtained the developers' Telegram account, email address, phone number and contact information.
