On August 16, according to Decrypt, cryptocurrency wallets linked to EndBad Governance protesters in Nigeria are still active and transacting, despite a court order to freeze them.
According to a recent report by local news outlet Premium Times, the wallets contained more than $37 million and were frozen by judge Emeka Nwite on July 9. However, an investigation by Techpoint Africa found discrepancies between court documents and blockchain data, suggesting that the wallets may not have been fully restricted.
The investigation found that one wallet listed in court records held $967, which later showed a balance of $172. The other wallet was alleged to hold $443,512, but showed a balance of $233,574. The wallet, which is linked to cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin, continues to process transactions, including recent transfers of $50,000 to an unidentified wallet. The EndBad Governance protests are understood to be a series of nationwide demonstrations sparked by Nigeria's economic crisis. Protesters rallied against the rising cost of living, record inflation and rising food prices, which many blamed on President Bora Tinubu's economic reforms.
