美国联邦贸易委员会（FTC）在 8 月 14 日表示，其委员以 5-0 的投票结果通过了这项新的联邦规定，该规定将在发布到《联邦公报》后的 60 天内生效。这意味着它们可能会在 10 月生效。
这些规则禁止任何人「出售或购买虚假的社交媒体影响指标」，包括由机器人或被劫持账户生成的关注者或观看量。
美国广告律师 Rob Freund 在社交媒体表示，「任何通过非真实手段增加观看量、保存量、播放量、订阅量、点赞等，都违反了新规则。」
