On August 14th, the Polkadot network passed the RFC97 proposal, which aims to significantly shorten the unlocking period of DOT tokens. The proposal was approved by Fellowship after review and discussion, and its code or design has been merged into the main code repository.
The new mechanism will change the original fixed 28-day unlock period to a flexible 2-28 days, which will be dynamically adjusted according to the size of the unlock request queue. When the queue is relatively empty, the unlock period can be completed in as little as 2 days; when the unlock request (in terms of pledge) exceeds a certain threshold, the unlock period will be extended to 28 days. The proposal proposes to implement and test the model on the Kusama network to evaluate its effectiveness and stability before considering integration into the Polkadot mainnet.
