Paul Grewal, chief legal officer at Coinbase, said in an X post: "Today, the SEC filed a response to our request for important documents that demonstrate the SEC's inconsistent views on digital assets and the scope of its own regulation. If the SEC is going to launch an unprecedented campaign of enforcement regulation, the minimum they need to do is be transparent with those they target (and the public)."
It emerged earlier today that lawyers for the U.S. SEC are opposing Coinbase's request for subpoenas seeking to search for "essentially all crypto-related documents," which the SEC says are too broad. The court filing on Monday is the latest development in the ongoing legal battle between the SEC and Coinbase. Coinbase seeks to subpoena the SEC and its employees, including Chairperson Gary Gensler, for communications and other records that could help Coinbase defend itself in the upcoming trial against the SEC.
