Polygon's mainnet upgrade is scheduled for September 4, 2024. After receiving community approval, its native tokens will be converted from MATIC to POL. POL is expected to maintain MATIC's existing token economics, distribution, and total supply. Subsequent phases may see the expansion of POL functionality, particularly within AggLayer, depending on community input.
The testnet migration launched on July 17 is designed to identify and resolve potential issues ahead of the mainnet upgrade, which will see POL replace MATIC as the primary token for gas fees and staking.
