The "emergency sale" of nearly 50,000 bitcoins has ended, according to German law enforcement, with revenues of $2.88 billion (2.639 billion euros), up from about $2.10 billion when German law enforcement seized the bitcoins. The proceeds do not initially represent any additional income for the Free State of Saxony, but will be held until the criminal proceedings are finally concluded, German law enforcement said.
The sale, which totaled 49,858 bitcoins, took place between June 19 and July 12 and was a coordinated effort by the Central Office for the Protection, Custody and Use of Cryptocurrencies of the German State Police of Saxony, the Dresden Prosecutor's Office, and the German trading firm Bankhaus Scheich.
