On April 1, Türkiye's current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan may suffer a disastrous defeat in the local elections with the main opposition parties. At present, Türkiye is experiencing rampant inflation and its borrowing costs have reached the highest level since Erdogan came to power more than 20 years ago. According to the preliminary results released by TRT, Türkiye's state broadcaster, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) led by Erdogan fell behind the Republican People's Party (CHP) led by Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, for the first time in Sunday's elections. With over two-thirds of the votes counted, AKP's approval rating is 36.3%, while CHP leads with 37.2%. The poll results show that voters in most parts of the country oppose the ruling party, but the changes are more significant in urban areas. This is mainly because even if Erdogan allows the central bank to raise the key interest rate to 50%, the inflation rate remains high.
