Zambia is moving ahead with the enactment of regulations banning the use of foreign currencies, including the US dollar. A draft document released to the public by the Bank of Zambia includes measures in this regard, aimed at strengthening the use of the national fiat currency, the kwacha.
The document proposes up to ten years in prison for using currencies other than the kwacha and hefty fines for citizens who violate the rules. The rules, which are expected to be formalized by the finance and national planning ministers, could affect the way Zambians and tourists trade in the country.
