On July 5th, according to a report by blockchain intelligence firm TRM, the number of cryptocurrencies stolen through hackers and network vulnerabilities more than doubled to $1.38 billion in the first half of this year. Of these, five large attacks accounted for 70% of the stolen cryptocurrencies. Still, the amount of theft in the first half of this year is still lower than nearly $2 billion in the first half of 2022, which was also a record year for cryptocurrency theft.
TRM said that hackers mainly steal cryptocurrencies by obtaining cryptographic strings such as private keys and seed codes. The largest attack this year occurred on the Japanese exchange DMM Bitcoin, with more than $300 million worth of bitcoins and more than 4,500 tokens stolen. The cause of the attack has not yet been determined.
