The North Carolina General Assembly on Wednesday passed a bill restricting the use and acceptance of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) issued by the Federal Reserve by the state government. House Bill 690 is now before Governor Roy Cooper for approval, a day after the Senate passed it by a 39-5 vote. On June 26, the House passed the bill by a 109-4 vote.
If Mr. Cooper signs the bill into law, it would immediately bar the state's institutions and courts from accepting "payments using central bank digital currencies." It would also bar them from participating in CBDC tests conducted "by any branch of the Federal Reserve."
