Four Vietnamese citizens have been charged in court in the United States over a series of cyber intrusions that caused more than $71 million in damages. The defendants are members of the cybercrime organization "FIN9", who allegedly hacked the United States. Between May 2018 and October 2021, the company stole non-public information, employee benefits and funds. They used the stolen personal and credit card information to create accounts on cryptocurrency exchanges, concealing their identities. They also sold stolen gift cards through peer-to-peer cryptocurrency marketplaces. The charges include conspiracy to commit fraud, wire fraud, intentional damage to a protected computer, money laundering and identity theft, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
