JusticeDAO, an advocacy group that aims to raise funds for the legal defense of those arrested, has raised more than 654 Ethereum, worth $2.30 million as of press time, through a fundraiser to free Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm and developer Alexey Pertsev on the decentralized platform Juicebox. The fund also raised 70 ETH through the JusticeDAO page. Supporters of the cryptocurrency community claim that creating means of protecting financial privacy (e.g. through cryptocurrency mixers) does not constitute a crime. However, regulators disagree.
The fund includes a large donation from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, himself a privacy advocate who has published multiple papers and made many proposals for enhancing Ethereum's privacy.
Despite the help of the crypto community, the founder of Tornado Cash still faces serious charges.
