India Proposes Tougher Penalties for Exam Paper Leaks

According to Lianhe Zaobao citing AFP, the Indian government on Tuesday, July 28, proposed longer prison terms and higher fines for people who leak exam papers, after youth-led protests over education inequality spread across the country. Under legal amendments submitted to parliament, the maximum prison sentence for paper leaks would double to 10 years, fines would rise to as much as USD 1 million, and court proceedings would be expedited. India’s education minister Pradhan resigned last week after weeks of protests. Senior minister Singh told the lower house the proposed amendments reaffirm the government's commitment to student and youth welfare and are intended to make the law stricter, ensure swift justice and restore confidence in examinations. The Supreme Court on Tuesday also ordered the release of all protesters under 18 with no criminal record who were detained during the protest movement.
