According to Axios, President Donald Trump's Project Homecoming self-deportation program is on pace to account for more than 200,000 departures from the U.S., according to internal data shared with Axios. Through July 16, the nearly $600 million Department of Homeland Security program had helped about 132,000 people leave the country, while roughly 70,000 more have signed up and are expected to depart. About half of the departures have involved immigrants in detention, and the initiative is now in 40 ICE detention sites. DHS says each self-deportation costs about $2,500 plus the stipend paid to the deportee, compared with about $18,245 to remove an immigrant who does not volunteer, and the agency projects $2.5 billion in savings on removal costs.
