Prudential: More Than Three Dissenting Votes at Fed Meeting Could Signal a September Hike

According to Jin10, Prudential said the number of dissenting votes at this week's Federal Reserve meeting will be closely watched as a gauge of how divided the Federal Open Market Committee is. Prudential's U.S. chief economist Blerina Uruci said she expects a 10-2 vote, with Dallas Fed President Lorie K. Logan and Cleveland Fed President Beth M. Hammack voting against and favoring a 25-basis-point rate hike. Uruci said that if dissenting votes top three, it would be a clearer signal that the committee is moving toward a rate hike in September, even if rates are left unchanged in July. She added that her base case is for the FOMC to keep rates unchanged over the next 12 months and said Fed Governor Kevin Warsh's desire for a September hike does not appear as strong as current market pricing suggests.
