According to CNBC, inflation-protected bonds saw a sharp jump in yields last week, with the 10-year Treasury inflation-protected securities bond topping 2.42%, its highest level since October 2023, and the 30-year TIPS rising above 2.97%, its highest yield since late November 2008. The move came as the U.S. launched a series of attacks against Iran, lifting oil prices and reviving inflation concerns.

International Brent crude oil futures rose more than 14% on the week, while Collin Martin, head of fixed income research and strategy at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, said long-term TIPS yields are very high and attracting attention. Matt Wrzesniewsky, head of fixed income client portfolio management at Vanguard, said investors see attractive yield levels but also face significant interest rate risk and volatility, especially in longer-dated securities. The article also noted that TIPS can be bought directly through TreasuryDirect in 5-, 10- or 30-year maturities, and that the Vanguard Short-Term Inflation-Protected Securities ETF (VTIP) had a 30-day SEC yield of 2.02% and an average duration of 2.3 years.
