In a recent interview, Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet shared his journey from initial skepticism to a deep understanding of Bitcoin's potential. Guillemet said that in its current form, it is not possible to use it for a wider range of purposes because the block space is too small, too scarce, and Bitcoin is not scalable enough.
Guillemet suggested that scaling solutions could enable Bitcoin to support a variety of uses, including anchoring data and execution state from other systems. Guillemet suggested creating a robust Layer 2 solution for Bitcoin that enables more efficient and scalable transaction processing while leveraging the security of the Bitcoin blockchain.
However, Guillemet also points out that simply anchoring the data (hash) to the Bitcoin blockchain is not enough to guarantee the validity of the data unless there is additional context and proof of execution. Guillemet believes that advances like OP_CAT or other innovative approaches could enhance Bitcoin's functionality, enabling it to support a wider range of applications without compromising its core principles.
Guillemet particularly advocates the use of dedicated new OP code that allows ZK proofs to be validated on-chain, enabling an enhanced Layer 2 Bitcoin solution. Being able to combine ZK proofs with Layer 2 will reduce the trust required for off-chain processing and expand Bitcoin's potential as a data settlement layer outside of finance without increasing block space.
