Japanese listed company Metaplanet has acquired Siiibo Securities, which holds a license for Type I financial products business, allowing it to design and sell securities in Japan. According to ChainCatcher, Benchmark said the roughly 2.1 billion yen acquisition is widely viewed as a small expansion, but Metaplanet plans to use it to issue Bitcoin-backed bonds called Bitbonds with an annual yield of about 4% to 6%.
The company also plans to move the products on-chain over time, settle them with stablecoins, and gradually build a secondary market. Metaplanet aims to let companies that want to adopt a Bitcoin balance sheet strategy issue bonds on its platform to buy BTC, as part of its Project Nova roadmap to build a new financial institution centered on Bitcoin. The company currently holds about 43,000 BTC, making it the third-largest public Bitcoin treasury globally.
