According to Yonhap, South Korea's travel account posted a surplus for a third straight month in May as foreign visitor arrivals increased. The account showed a surplus of $220.5 million, reversing a $820.2 million deficit a year earlier, according to Korea Tourism Organization data.
Travel income came to $2.58 billion in May, above travel spending of $2.36 billion. Each foreign visitor spent an average of $1,324 in South Korea, while each South Korean traveler spent $1,007 overseas.
Separate government data showed foreign arrivals rose 19.4% from a year earlier to 1.95 million in May, while the number of South Koreans traveling abroad fell 2.1% to 2.34 million. Kim Nam-jo, a tourism professor at Hanyang University, said rising foreign visits have been supported by the growing popularity of the Korean Wave and a weaker won, while higher airfares tied to the Middle East conflict have discouraged South Koreans from traveling overseas.
